History of our blanket obsession

Although I haven’t counted, I have lease 30 decorative blankets, plus a couple in my car. At least 2 of which I’ve handmade. And, I can’t live without my weighted blanket. When retail shopping I intuitively somehow find myself in the blanket section and slowly walk by, touching each one. What if it’s winter and we lose power? Wouldn’t this one look better in my bedroom or living room? In my attempt to not over consume, I tell myself that I should reserve any additional blanket purchases pre-spring and pre-fall. Sometimes that works.
My obsession with blankets no doubt is somehow connected with the need to feel emotionally comforted over the functional warmth they provide. In my attempt to not overthink, I tell myself it’s because of my love of textiles and textures. Whatever the root cause, I know I’m not alone.
Here is a great article from Bearaby that explores the psychology of our need for blankets.
“No great mind has ever existed without some touch of madness.”
